AMIT MANNA 

 Aaron Copland once said, "You compose because you want to somehow summarise in some permanent form your most basic feelings about being alive". This is my journey as a composer, and I invite you to come along with me!


Bio



Amit is a composer and conductor based in Manchester, UK, whose music explores a range of styles, stemming from the variety of genres he's been exposed and his broad artistic interests. Amit is an avid believer that modernism and tonality are not mutually exclusive and is currently fascinated with creating music that is both accessible and innovative.

Over the years, Amit's work has gained recognition through several prestigious opportunities. In 2022, he was selected for the Apprentice Scheme as part of ORA Singers' Young Composer competition, and has had his composition from the Sound and Music Summer School was highlighted in a British Music Collection article. His music has also reached wide audiences, including a feature in the BBC Sleeping Forecast radio mix in 2023, and in February 2024, Amit had the priviledge to to write for the renowned BBC Singers. Other notable commissions and works include An Elegy for Wilted Roses for Soprano and Chamber Ensemble (Commissioned by Sophia Brown), She Was Brave for Horn and Chamber Orchestra (Commissioned by The Altrincham Concert Orchestra) and Scared of Heights​ for Symphony Orchestra, premiered by the Royal Northern College of Music's Brand New Orchestra.  ​

Amit has studied under multiple esteemed composers such as Florence Anna Maunders, Dr. Sylvia Lim, and currently, Dr. Emily Howard at the Royal Northern College of Music. Each tutor has significantly aided his artistic journey, encouraging him to experiment with musical form and enabling him to shape his musical identity.

Beyond composing, Amit is also an aspiring conductor, having appeared as a student conductor on numerous occasions across various ensembles during his time at St. Bartholomew's School. This includes leading the Senior Band for performances of Howard Blake's 'The Snowman' in December 2022, as well as conducting the Choir in Italy during the school music tour in July 2023.
